Gunārs Binde: 5 photographs, 5 stories
Gunārs Binde (1933) is a Latvian photography legend, best known for his black and white nudes and portraits of the Latvian intelligentsia. One of the best known is the portrait of the theater director Eduards Smiļģis that still decorates the mural of the New Riga Theater building on Lāčplēša Street in Riga. He has studied photography through self-study since 1957. He has achieved international success already in the 1960s, was a member of the Riga photo club, participated in more than 100 exhibitions. He has made photo films, set decorations for theater performances, worked as an lighting artist, as well as participated in the making of documentaries. He has always preferred to create a photographic representation rather than simple documentation.
