Self Publish Riga top 10
Over 170 photobook dummies were submitted to the international SELF PUBLISH RIGA 2016 contest that took part within the framework of Riga Photomonth. The winners and the TOP 10 was selected by the contest jury – Erik Kessels (NL), artist, curator, publisher, collector of vernacular photography and creative director of the Dutch communications agency KesselsKramer, Gordon MacDonald of GOST Books (UK), Hester Keijser, freelance curator, author of The Independent Photo Book blog (Netherlands), Vincent Marcilhacy, founder and director of the Eyes Magazine (France), and Lithuanian photobook designer and Brave Books publisher Tom Mrazauskas. The ten selected dummies represent a variety of topics and styles. The shortlisted books speak about both political issues that concern communities, as well as very personal stories that question their place in the world.
First place went to Czech photographer Vojtěch Veškrna’s book My Air Force, which focuses on the author’s passion for aircraft and his relationship with his father and grandfather, who like him, had a soft spot for flying. Veškrna as the winner of the contest received a place at a workshop of his choice at the International Summer School of Photography 2016.
